Tutor

Charis started her yoga journey in the 1970s while a student at university in England. Her teacher in Oxford was Kofi Busia, who had trained closely with Mr Iyengar in Pune.

Charis's working life was in journalism, editing and book writing. She wrote three books on China and Chinese architecture under her married name of Charis Chan. She also spent many years as a BBC journalist covering first Latin American politics and then Asian politics.

Ten years ago, she rediscovered her passion for yoga and retrained as a yoga teacher, thus leaving behind her career in journalism.

Her yoga diploma trainer was Wendy Haring, who has trained with Mr Iyengar and Mr Desikachar. Thus Charis's own teaching has been informed by the traditions of both teachers.

The British Wheel of Yoga teacher diploma is the gold standard of yoga training in the UK as it has a broad curriculum including the traditions and philosophy of yoga as well as anatomy, physiology and nutrition.

Charis lives in Dorset and teaches in Poole in her own yoga studio and we are delighted to welcome her at Grue Demoiselle to teach this amazing week of Yoga indulgence.

The Week

The theme for the week is "Opening the Heart and Creating Balance" with vinyasas focusing on balancing poses, back bends and flowing sequences of warrior 1 and warrior 2. Pranayama work will also focus on balancing the breath with Nadhi Sodhana as the key practice.

The heart chakra will be the focus of meditations.

The sessions are designed to open the chest, create stillness and balance of body and mind, while inevitably helping joint mobility.

Each day will begin with an early morning physical practice before breakfast for 40 mins. Then another session two hours after breakfast with physical practice and pranayama for two hours.

There will be an optional late afternoon practice of pranayama, relaxation and meditation for one hour.

This is a guideline for the week and there will be plenty of time to enjoy the retreat, book a treatment, use the bicycles, go for a lovely walk or bask in the sunshine.

Some of the late afternoon sessions may be practiced off site, Lake St Pardoux and the sacred standing stone sites are two possible venues along with a refreshing swim in the lake before returning to Grue Demoiselle for a late evening dinner.

The food for this week will be a wide variety of freshly prepared vegetarian dishes with fish available some nights as well. Wine is also included with the evening meals and we also use our home grown and locally grown produce as much as possible. We are proud of our reputation for excellent food and fresh fruit and bottled water is always freely available, along with unlimited fruit and herbal teas and
even freshly brewed coffee. How can you resist?
